Ann Arbor Public Schools is a fast growing school district with the largest growth currently in their K-5 grades. The district was in need to quickly add space at 4 of their sites for the 2017-2018 school year. AAPS went out for
public bid for a high quality, design built modular building project. The project required the installation of a (4) four classroom building with restrooms and canopies to connect the modular buildings to the existing structure. The hope was to design a building that provides an environment equal to or greater than the environment of the existing classrooms.

IMS was awarded the project in early spring and began working on the design. The exterior of the modular building is Hardie lap siding, FRP doors, vinyl windows, 60 mil EPDM roof, and bronze wall hung HVAC units. The interior finishes are mud, tape, and paint with LED lights, 8’-6” drop ceilings, and VCT flooring. For cost efficiency and speed of design and installation, all four buildings were built with identical floor plans .

The kids like to refer to the modular buildings as “the upper peninsula” and the ramps as “the Mackinac Bridge”. They find it fun to walk from the “lower peninsula” (their main school) to the ”upper peninsula” (the modulars)
throughout the day!
